VETERINARY ANAESTHESIA BASIC SCIENCE REVISION COURSE 2012
Download the flyer here
Following a successful inaugural course, we are pleased to announce the basic science revision course designed for veterinary anaesthesia trainees will be running again in 2012. Although aimed primarily at candidates for the European Diploma of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia and the RCVS Diploma in Veterinary Anaesthesia the course will be suitable for anyone undertaking further study in veterinary anaesthesia and related disciplines who wishes to consolidate their knowledge in the basic sciences and their relevance to veterinary anaesthesia.
The course will be run at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh from Monday the 2nd April 2012 to Friday the 6th April 2012 inclusive. It will consist of five intensive days of lectures with associated MCQ sessions to consolidate the knowledge gained. There will be opportunities for book discussions as well as the chance to exchange ideas with trainees from other institutions and experts in their respective fields. There will also be a course meal as well as one of Professor Clutton’s infamous quiz nights.
The course speakers include the veterinary anaesthetists Prof. Eddie Clutton, Dr. Karen Blissitt, Dr. Mark Senior, Ms. Liz Leece and Mr. Ian Self. In addition, specialists in pharmacokinetics/dynamics (Dr. Sally Argyle) and statistics from the University of Edinburgh will present lectures.
Following very positive feedback from delegates on the 2011 course the topics have been refined; subjects to be covered include (but are not limited to);
- Respiration – physiology and monitoring, mechanics, compliance
- Oxygen and CO2 including dissociation curve, shunts
- Physics including the gas laws
- Statistics
- Cardiovascular, CNS, muscle, renal, and hepatic physiology relevant to anaesthesia
- Monitors – how they work and equipment errors
- Acid base Physiology and monitoring
- Monitoring neuromuscular function
- Pain
- Ventilators
Optional sessions will examine equipment which may not be familiar to all participants and allow discussion of advanced anaesthetic monitoring techniques.
The course fee is £375 for registered DipECVAA and DVA candidates and £400 for non-registered attendees. This includes all lectures, printed notes and discussion sessions. To minimise fees accommodation is not included in the cost but the University of Edinburgh will make available a number of rooms in university halls and these can be booked separately via the course organiser. Informal arrangements will be made to transport delegates from the university halls to the veterinary school. Similarly, lunch is not included but there is a cafeteria at the veterinary school at which participants may purchase hot or cold food throughout the day.
For further details and to reserve a place on the course please email the course organiser Mr Ian Self at ian.self@ed.ac.uk.
Please book early as places will be limited.

Pharmacokinetics course: A two and one half day workshop to provide attendees a comprehensive review of pharmacokinetic principles applied to veterinary and comparative medicine.
A goal of the course is to integrate basic concepts into practical applications. Topic covered include fundamental concepts of modeling, pharmacokinetic parameters, compartmental versus non-compartmental approaches, study design, bio equivalence, estimating withdrawal times, estimating dosage regimens, modern software, practical statistics involved in curve fitting, therapeutic drug monitoring, population pharmacokinetics, interspecies extrapolation and the effect of disease or interactions on pharmacokinetics in animals. We are trying to assess interest in hosting a similar workshop on October 3 and 4th in Raleigh. Cost for attendees would be $1500 which would include refreshments, lunches and the Second Edition of the Wiley-Blackwell text “Comparative Pharmacokinetics”. Lodging is separate. The venue has not been selected as we need enough interest to proceed further. If this may be of interest to you, please drop an email to “KineticWorkshop@RiviereConsulting.com”.
