What is the Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists?

The Association of Veterinary Anaesthetists is an active, enthusiastic group of veterinary surgeons and others (e.g. researchers, technicians, pharmacologists) who share an interest in animal anaesthesia, analgesia and animal welfare. We hold meetings twice a year at various venues in Europe which are open to all those who share our common interest. The Association was established in 1964 to promote the study of, and research into, the subject of anaesthesia and analgesia in animals. It also publishes the Journal of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia and has been active in the founding of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia. We are keen to promote collaboration between anaesthetists in all places, and actively encourage the establishment and taking of diplomas and degrees in veterinary anaesthesia.

The Association also has an educational Trust Fund to support training in anaesthesia.

The membership of the Association, now extending to over 400 members, includes veterinary surgeons in general practice as well as specialist veterinary anaesthetists, university teachers, medical anaesthetists, scientists, technicians all with a common interest in anaesthesia and related subjects. Although based in Europe we have a large membership in North America and the Antipodes. The AVA always welcomes new members - if you have a professional interest in anaesthesia, why not apply to join the association. The application for membership can be downloaded here

A key change that followed the Helsinki AVA committee meeting was the introduction of a new AVA Literature Screening Sub-committee. The aims of this committee are three fold:

a) to judge cases of unethical animal treatment as reported in all branches of the scientific literature as a preliminary step to recommending an AVA response;

b) to monitor and record the incidence of reported cases in order to publish the results of   ongoing studies in this area;

c) as a result of these: i) to reduce the publication of unethical material; ii) to raise the AVA’s profile.

Due to the increasing profile that AVA is playing in ethics and welfare issues we have created a new Ethics and Welfare web page (see menu left). Full details about the new AVA Literature Screening Sub-committee cen be found on the ethics page.
